Karl Lagerfeld, creative director of Chanel since 1983 and as well as Fendi since 1965 was died on February 19, 2019. He was renounced one of the most prolific designers of both the 20th and 21st centuries redefining the modern fashion industry. Known for his twist on Chanel classics (pearls, C’s & tweed of course) and elaborate runway shows the collection of his last collection, co-designed by his successor Virginie Viard, absolutely did not disappoint.

From grocery stores to airports Lagerfeld has staged many interesting scenes as the runway for his shows. This past Fall 2019 season, Viard created a snow covered winter wonderland at the Grand Palais in Paris. All guests were gifted an illustrated version of Karl and Coco Chanel who appeared alongside the words “the beat goes on. Unlike Karl himself, the show was sentimental to say the least, beginning with a moment of silence broken by his voice over a sound system.

As for the collection itself, it very much reflected both the winter wonderland atmosphere as well as the traditional Chanel legacy. While of course including elements of tweed and pearls, the pieces also included playful tulle snowballs, different colored puffers and ski tops with crystalline patterns. In light of the current events, the organza blouses, wide leg trousers and dazzling embroideries gave an uplifting remembrance to Lagerfeld. The show closed with a finale to Lagerfeld’s favorite song “Heroes” by David Bowie. As Chanel lives on, so will Lagerfeld’s legacy in the fashion industry.
